Kayan`s Team

Board of Directors
 
Shahira Shalabi, a social worker by education, works as an  organizational consultant at Shatil, the New Israel Fund`s empowerment and training center. She co-founded Kayan in 1998 and was Kayan`s Public Relations Coordinator. As a staff member of the Hotline for Battered Women and a volunteer for the Haifa Rape Crisis Center, she worked in the Haifa Women`s Coalition for 15 years. A former board member and Chairwoman of the Board of Kayan, she re-joined the board in 2008.
 
 
 
 
Amal Ziadi holds an L.L.B. in Political Science and Middle East History from Haifa University. Candidate for an MA in Middle East History, Haifa University, and for an LLB in Law, Sharry Mishpat College of Law.  A Media Coordinator working with Adalah, The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. Worked at Mossawa Center, The Advocacy Center for Arab Citizens in Israel, And at the Arab students at The Committee for Educational Guidance for Arab Students (CEGAS).
 
 
Inas Talhami, Has an MA in psychology from Haifa University, And is an educational and clinical psychologist.  For close to 4 years, she was on staff as the Empowerment Coordinator, and both led courses and developed gender sensitivity programs. She works with children as a psychologist in the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
 
 
 
 
 
Manal Saabneh earned a degree in computer engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, and is working as a software engineer in a high-tech company. She is also a board member of Wa Afaaq Nisaa (Women and Horizons), a Muslim feminist organization in the Triangle region, and a board member of the Triangle Research and Development Center in Kufr Qara.
 
 
 
Umayma Diab holds a BA in education from Bar Ilan University and an MA in Sociology from Tel Aviv University. She was a researcher on Arab women `s employment, civil society, communications and education at the Political Science Department of Tel Aviv University and at several civil-society organizations. She also was Administrative Director of the Walter Lebach Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence through Education at Tel Aviv University.
 
 
Taghreed al Sayyid holds an MA in Early Childhood Education from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and lectures in this field at Sakhnin College. She is the Director of a training program for ECCD experts at Joint-Ashakim, editing manuals and Facilitating groups. She was also a regional supervisor of Childcare workers.
 
 
 
 
Controlling Committee
 
Reem Assad develops material and Supervises staff of Early Child Care and Development programs for Arab children in the Acre Women `s Organization and Musharaka, a Coalition of ECCD organizations. A certified community organizer, she worked with Shatil for 5 years as group Facilitator and project coordinator. She holds a BA in education from Tel Hai Academic College and an MA in Early Childhood Education from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, as well as a teaching and coaching certificate.
 
Yasmin Hajj is a counselor for elderly with mental disabilities. She holds a BA in Criminology and Education from Bar Ilan University. Yasmin has been involved in Kayan since 2008 when she started to volunteer in Kayan `s administrative unit.
 
 
 
 
 
  
Staff
 
Rula Deeb, Director
involved as a feminist activist in organizations and initiatives Regionally and Nationally.  In 1994, she joined the Isha-L `Isha Feminist Center as Empowerment Coordinator, and was later Editor of their bilingual newsletter. In 1998, she co-founded Kayan, was Empowerment Coordinator for 3 years, and Director for the past 4 years.  She started the Childcare and Mobility projects, and remains active in many initiatives.
 
 
 
Rafah Anabtawi, Empowerment and Community Organizing and Community Coordinator
A social worker with a degree from Haifa University, And an expert Facilitator with almost a decade of experience in group work.  She manages a center to combat drug abuse in Nazareth, As well as doing Facilitation work with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI).
 
 
 

Shirin Batshon-Khoury, Coordinator of the Legal Department

A graduate of the Faculty of Law at Tel Aviv University, And a lawyer since 2002. Previously worked at the Ministry of Law `s Legal Aid Department in Jerusalem, And at Hamoked: Center for the Defense of the Individual, an Israeli human rights Organization providing legal aid to Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza.

 
 
 

Alhan Nahhas-Daoud, Lawyer

A graduate of the Faculty of Law at Haifa University, And a lawyer since 1997. She joined Kayan in 2008. After 5 years of work in private law offices, she worked at Mossawa, the Advocacy Center for Arab Citizens in Israel uNtil 2007. She completed her master `s degree in Conflict Management (Ethnic Groups and Security) at Royal Roads University in Canada, And for the past two years Participates in a course on conflict resolution of Shatil and Responding to Conflict.

 

Dr. Bettina Suleiman, Development Coordinator

Holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Leipzig University, Germany. Her dissertation Explores the argument of self-defense in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A fundraiser and Public Relations officer since 2002, she has worked and Volunteered for a number of community NGOs, networks and public institutions in Israel and Germany.
 
 

Iris Klor, Chief Financial Officer

joined Kayan `s staff in this position in August 2009. She Studied Accounting Management at the Michlala Lminhal and has worked for over fifteen years in this field.

 

 

 
 
 
Interns & Volunteers
 

Elise Shazar is a professional translator and media consultant. She volunteers for Kayan as an English-Hebrew translator.

 
Nosayr Yassin,a 17 years old high school student from the Village of Arabeh, volunteers for Kayan as an Arabic-English translator. Nosayr is studying at the Albasha `er School for Science, Sakhnin. He is a volunteer in many different organizations such as the International Humanity Foundation, Global Challenge Award, WatchingAmerica, and Wolfram | Alpha Search Engine. His spectrum of expertise ranges from language translation to scientific Researches. He is a strong advocate for a Greener environment and for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
 
 Megan Leatherman comes from the U.S. and recently Graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a BA in Psychology and Women `s Studies. In college, she co-founded a group that gender Equality Actively addressed feminist issues on campus. She hopes to go on to study women `s issues in an international context. Megan is interning with the JUSUR project and the PR department. She will be with us until late December.
 
 
Amos Heuss is a Master student of political science and education at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. He currently spends two semesters at the International School of the University of Haifa where he is enrolled in the Honors Program in Peace and Conflict Studies. Amos volunteered for 18 month in Moscow, Russia, from 2002 to 2003 doing his civil service; he was working with elderly people who had been persecuted by the Stalinist regime and refugee children from the Chechen conflict. Amos is interning with the JUSUR project and the PR department. He will be with us until the end of December.
